UFO

Calgary, February 2021

Mary was looking out of the window of her bedroom and saw UFO landing at the nearby field. She run down to the kitchen where her husband was making their usual afternoon coffee, and yelled:
“John, UFO just landed at the field. Come and look!”
“Don’t be crazy Mary, there are no UFOs. Sit down and have a coffee.”
“No, come up, there is UFO over there, I saw it. I am sure of it!”

So, to keep the peace in the family, John went upstairs, looked out of the window but there was nothing. Mary also looked out and indeed, UFO wasn’t there anymore.
“It must have taken off, it was there, I saw it!”
“OK, it was there, but now it flew away, so let’s have a coffee.”

For John that was the end of the story, but not for Mary. She talked to their neighbours, did some research, typed furiously to Google and found out that the area where they lived was practically crawling with UFOs. Their house was located north of Las Vegas, close to the notorious and super-secret Area 51, where US government was storing the wreckage of the crashed UFO and also the corpse of its pilot. The aliens knew about it and were sending UFOs to patrol the area. Lot of people believed that. According to the CNN/Time poll, 80% of Americans believed that the U.S. government is covering-up the alien presence. Obviously, 80% of people can’t be wrong.

“John, we have to move, it is not safe here, we could be abducted”, Mary was screaming in desperation.
“Mary, please, stop being crazy. There are no UFOs.”
“Of course they are! Look at the Internet. There are UFO sightings everywhere.”
“Yes, and the aliens are taking over the world. I keep reading all about it on the Internet.”
“I don’t know about taking over the world, but there are documented cases of people being abducted by UFOs. Just look at the example of Travis Walton. He was abducted for five days and wrote a book about it!”
“And made a lot of money for his fairy tale. Smart fellow.”
“John, if you don’t want to move with me, I will go by myself. In Las Vegas I will find a nice apartment and if you want, you are welcome to join me.”

There was nothing John could do. Mary withdrew some money from their saving account and drove to Las Vegas in a search for an apartment. When she returned home, she was full of enthusiasm. “John, I found a perfect apartment for us. It is in the middle of the town, where no UFO can land.”
“Mary, what on earth got into you? Are you really crazy?”

Mary did not say anything and started to pack for the move, but it was too late. Next day she disappeared, and the neighbours described another UFO sighting nearby to Mary’s house. Everybody believed that Mary was abducted by it. John did not believe it for a second but couldn’t understand why Mary wanted to leave him. They had a good marriage. Besides, Mary did not take any money from their joined account except for that trip to Las Vegas. It did not make any sense.

One week later, at night, Mary returned. She was dirty and looked tired, as if she had walked for a long time. When John asked what happened, she said that she was abducted by UFO. To him it confirmed that she really was crazy, but John was mistaken. When the word got round that Mary, who was abducted by UFO, returned, everybody wanted to know all about it. The phone did not stop ringing, there were journalists lining up wanting to talk to her and she signed a very lucrative book contract for her fairy tale. Mary was a smart woman.
